ODG (OpenDocument Graphics) files are the default file format for OpenOffice Draw. These files are much like other vector file formats such as PDF, XML and EPS. OpenOffice is a free program, available from the OpenOffice website, that can open odg files as well as many spreadsheet, word and document files. After downloading and installing OpenOffice your computer should open odg files with OpenOffice Draw automatically. However, in some instances it is necessary to open odg files by locating the OpenOffice program and start the OpenOffice Draw program. Once the program is running you can open odg files by choosing “File” at the top bar, then “Open” and then finding the odg file you would like to open on your computer.
The odg file format was developed by OASIS, a non-profit company that develops open document standards. The goal was to create a file format that would allow users to open odg files as well as many other file types with a single program in order to allow global document sharing. As a result the odg file type has become an industry standard in document sharing; this is because users can open odg files without needing proprietary software and because the odg file type is so versatile.

“this is because users can open odg files without needing proprietary software and because the odg file type is so versatile.”
It kind of feels like I do need a proprietary software to open odg files since I need OpenOffice to open it. If there’s a way to open it using another program, it’s not mentioned here.
Proprietary software is computer software licensed under exclusive legal right of the copyright holder. OpenOffice on the other hand, is Open Source – which means that anyone is free
to change it (if you have the required skills).
